A stainless steel crown is a prefabricated crown, or tooth cap.  It is a thin shell of surgical grade stainless steel which covers the tooth like armor and seals the tooth from bacteria.  The stainless steel crown is often used when a baby tooth has a large cavity, or tooth decay on many surfaces of the tooth.  It is stronger than a large filling.
